Homegrown KC is a podcast written and produced by Laura Darnell. I love history and wanted to share my passion with others, especially my passion for local history which is so rarely taught in schools.
Established in 1850, Kansas City’s railroads and access to the Missouri River meant that the city quickly became a central hub in the Midwest. As a result, waves of migration in and out of the city have given it a diverse and rich heritage.
Every episode will delve into a person, place, or event from Kansas City’s multi-hued historical narrative.

I have a BA in Ancient and Medieval History with a Minor in Classical Studies from the University of Missouri Kansas City, and a MA in Public History from Middle Tennessee State University. I have always been interested in history, but it wasn’t until grad school that I realized how fundamental it is to our society; how it has shaped us nationally, but more importantly, how communities use their history to shape their identity. I also discovered an interest in historical narratives themselves- in how and why they are constructed, interpreted, and reinterpreted. I was first introduced to podcasts in 2017 while working on an excavation as a field tech for Tennessee Valley Archaeology Research and fell in love with them. Two years later I am working for an insurance firm in Kansas City and realized that I could combine my love for the city, history, and podcasts and create something amazing.
